Our department managers play an important role in the operations and success of Care & Share Thrift Shoppes.  Each of our managers is responsible for the successful day-to-day operations of their departments, from working with and guiding our volunteers and staff to handling customer/donor questions to meeting sales goals.  We are very thankful for their faithful work here, and we’re sure our volunteers are also supportive of the individuals in these roles.

Care & Share provides ongoing training programs for our management team, some of which are from outside training specialists.  We look for opportunities to challenge our team and provide avenues for increased growth and responsibilities, and paths to advancement.

During 2023, Betsy Heavener, Specialties manager, graciously agreed to take on new roles and responsibilities in our Clothing Workroom and to help us establish new pricing in the Variety Shoppe.  Of course, Betsy was no stranger to these departments, but her skills and guidance helped us to recenter our efforts to efficiently and effectively get merchandise processed and to the retail floor.  Thank you Betsy.

This month, we are excited to provide new opportunities to two of our talented managers.  Jerry Zimmerman, Furniture Manager, and Katie Rowan, Variety Manager, will be taking on new roles.

Katie will be leading the Furniture Shoppe, while Jerry will be directing operations in Variety.  This move will allow them to learn new skills, work with new volunteers and staff, and help them grow in their abilities.  It will bring a fresh look at these departments and a chance to try new ideas.

The transition will begin this week (February 5) with them spending time cross-training in their new departments.  This will be a busy and exciting time for them as they get to know the volunteers and customers.  If you work in either of these shoppes, please be sure to meet Katie and Jerry.  They will want to get to know you and learn what you enjoy doing while at Care & Share.  Please extend grace if they don’t remember your name immediately!  They are both people who love our volunteers and will want to get to know you.

These moves may lead to some transition blips, but your help will be invaluable.  Both Jerry and Katie are excited to begin new leadership roles and need your help to continue the success of the Variety and Furniture Shoppes!  Thank you for your faithful volunteer time!

ABC’s Action News, out of the Philadelphia market, visited Care & Share!  They filmed in several of our shoppes and stopped and shopped in each of them!  They were especially interested in our volunteer workforce, and the commitment to the mission of our organization.

Care & Share Thrift Shoppes is now a Certified Autism Center™, designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). To earn the designation, staff have completed autism training and certification in order to better understand and work with autistic visitors and supporters.

“At Care & Share, we are glad you are our neighbor! We want to be at our best to welcome you to shop, donate and volunteer," said Sarah Bergin, Executive Director. "After going through the certification process, our staff is now prepared with the knowledge that customers, donors, and volunteers are all differently abled. By welcoming everyone, our organization is stronger.”

In addition to a vibrant volunteer program, Care & Share also works with over 35 organizations as volunteers fine-tune skills in areas like receiving and processing donations, customer service, and social skills. The Shoppes accommodate weekly to daily volunteer opportunities for individuals of all different abilities.

“IBCCES is excited to announce the designation of Care & Share Thrift Shoppes to show that organizations of all types can benefit from training and certification to enhance the customer and community experience,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman.
